By Phil Grisolia Marketing pros often refer to it as differentiation. Academics who fancy themselves as marketers theyre text book authors, actually prefer to call it USP, your Unique Selling Proposition. What theyre both taking about is more correctly described as Wow!, whatever it is that separates your Stuff your products or services from the similar Stuff your competition is selling. Without some type of Wow!, your Stuff is just another me-too product, another me-too service. With nothing special to brag about, your Stuff is almost certain to languish, to just lay around, its sales never seeming to take off. Thats because without some Wow! your sales arent likely to ever soar. You Stuff will remain no different than the similar Stuff others pedal. Want your sales to take off? To really soar? Then youve got two choices. Youre either going to have to find your Wow!, or youre going to have to create some. And it doesnt make a great deal of different whether youre trying to sell Stuff to consumers or to other companies. Your Wow! is what will make you stand out head and shoulders above your competition. Consumers with their whats-in-it-for-me mentality typically focus on three things: Price, Quality and Service. Strangely enough, so do any companies you may be trying to sell to, if selling to companies is what your business is all about. Why is that? Because in both cases people make the buying decisions. When a company buys something whether its a $4o first aid kit for the shop or a $4 million jet for its execs its people who make the buying decisions. And when it comes to people, Wow! makes a difference a huge difference! So, either way, youre dealing with people. If your Stuff appears boringly similar to your competitions, find or create your Wow!. Move outside the confines of Price, Quality and Service. Offer something different, something more. Offer Wow!. How? you ask. Well, the following are some Wow! items that are often fairly easy to create: additional sizes; added colors; faster delivery; more delivery options; volume pricing; unique packaging; delayed billing; free warehousing; some type of guarantee. Now its time for you to expand your thinking even further. No, you dont have to give away the store. And you certainly dont have to offer all of the above. One or two Wow! items is usually enough to tip the balance in favor of your Stuff. What you need is just enough Wow! so youve got some reason to blow your own horn, something to brag about. And some reason your would-be buyer can use to mentally justify changing who they buy from. Also be sure to double-check your Stuff for existing Wow!, for benefits and features you may have ignored. Incidentally, if you do find hidden features, convert them to benefits, because benefits are what the whats-in-it-for-me buyers respond to. Maybe your Stuff lasts longer, smells better, contains more or better ingredients. Those are the kinds of Wow! you can take advantage of. You might want to start with close look at your Stuff to see if it contains more Wow! than you thought, Wow! youve overlooked or taken for granted. Lacking that, create Wow!. While your at it, create as much Wow! as possible. The more the merrier. The more Wow! you can offer, the faster youre likely to pull ahead way ahead of your competition. 2006, Philip A.
